"Miao Shan was the youngest of three daughters of a king in southern China. She incurred her father's wrath by refusing to marry, choosing instead the spiritual life of a nun. In anger, he ordered her execution. The Tiger was dispatched by the gods to rescue Miao Shan, and he carried her on his back to the Yellow Mountains, where she spent the next few years embracing the ascetic life. Then news arrived of her father's incurable illness. At a great sacrifice, she brewed the miracle potion, which saved the king's life. Pleased with her filial love and piety, they made her a goddess, and she comes to be known today as Kwan Yin, goddess of Mercy."
